Demands and Development of Open RAN

The telecom industry is going through significant changes driven by 5G, IoT, Cloud Computing, and an evolving and maturing Open RAN. The Open RAN will soon enter a new stage after it took off in 2020 in ways that no one ever expected. The initial idea of a new way of building radio networks based on a software-centric and open infrastructure is accomplished. Rakuten Mobile Open RAN deployment and several successful trials attracted the attention of many CSPs. There are still many questions and concerns such as uneven network performance, possible security issues, and Capex/Opex gain vs Legacy RAN Networks. Several polls show that the main interest of CSPs in Open RAN system is cost-effective deployment and operations. Only two of the major Legacy RAN vendors, Nokia and Samsung, are committed to providing 5G Open RAN solutions and contributing to Open RAN Organizations. A likely scenario for many CSPs is that the Open RAN deployments will be additions to the existing legacy network, and both systems need to be managed together for a while. Innovile Self Organizing Network (SON) and Configuration Management (CM) solutions are provided with the Network Management System Operation Module to complete the Open RAN integration and RAN network optimization.

The Role of Centralized Configuration Management

In today’s business climate, centralization and automation are essential. As a result, Centralized Configuration Management systems like Innovile CM solution has become a necessity for many CSPs. As a solution provider, we are observing an increasing demand from the operators for a complete solution to do the network processes like new node integrations, parameter compliance, optimizations, and operations. The most important aspect of these requests is automation. Quality of Service is the main driving force for operators and providing that requires a highly skilled workforce and high Capex/Opex spending. The software solutions have a vital role to cutback expenses, and they enable operators complete network tasks without error and with less headcounts. To be able to provide efficient and cost-effective solutions, Innovile is expanding its portfolio to focus on automation use cases.

SON solution is provided with a CM solution along with the NMS Operation Module to complete the end-to-end integration, optimization, and operation cycle. Model-based functions are used to provide vendor-independent task executions. This enables CSPs to handle all the required complex jobs in a simple way. Because the vendor-independent structure is used and all complexity is handled by the solution, expert vendor knowledge becomes unnecessary, and this leads to lower operational costs. In addition, using a centralized solution makes training easy and helps solution updates and modifications to be completed in a short time.

NBI – Key Module for Open RAN Integrations

Open RAN vendors’ NBI implementations are crucial for managing their systems with the existing CM platforms. During trials, NBI requirements should be clearly identified, and the scope of the trial should contain these interface tests as another success criteria. Taking into account the fact that non-standardized vendor-specific interfaces and protocols are one of the biggest hurdles for autonomous and zero-touch concepts, even NBI interface standardization should be considered.

Several CSPs use Innovile solutions with a wide range of functionalities, and a combination of CM, SON, and Network Management System modules create a harmonized solution for the operators who are looking for simplicity and E2E management capabilities. As Open RAN potential is acknowledged and evolutions occur rapidly, it will be an important alternative to the legacy networks. To be able to respond to these changes as a solution provider and remain competitive, embracing innovative technologies is now more important than ever for us. Innovile will continue expanding the capabilities of its solutions and Open RAN networks, becoming an essential part of its portfolio, will offer a full solution for all possible HetNet environments.
